- history of risks and disasters in the USSR
- history of the Gulag, repression, imprisonment, deportation, rehabilitation and former prisoners in the USSR
- transnational history of the earth sciences during the Cold War (pedology, climatology, hydrology)

- Urban pollution, deteriorating public health and protests in industrial towns in northeastern Kazakhstan, 1950s–1990s
- Droughts and erosion in the large-scale cereal-growing area of northern Kazakhstan in the 20th century
- Soil science in the Cold War: cooperation, competition and confrontation
